Dental pain has terrible timing. It escalates on a Friday, over a holiday, or the week the office is short-staffed. What determines whether you get in is whether a practice holds room in the day for it, which is why we ask what is happening before we route the call rather than sending everyone to the nearest office.
Be specific when you describe it. Pain that spikes on cold and stops. Pain that throbs and wakes you at night. A tooth broken with a sharp edge. A crown that fell off and is sitting in a napkin. A tooth knocked out completely, which is the one where minutes genuinely count. These get triaged differently and a good front desk can tell them apart.
One thing that is not a dental appointment: spreading facial swelling, or swelling with fever, difficulty swallowing, or difficulty breathing. That is an emergency room or urgent care situation and it should not wait for a dental schedule to open up.
